Frequency at Which a Radiator Should Be Flushed

Simple vehicle maintenance procedure like radiator flush could add several years to vehicle’s lifespan enabling you to enjoy its maximum use. Every machine seem to operate efficiently at the right temperature and the same goes for vehicles too. A core and two tanks linked by several tubes combine to form a heat exchanger called a radiator. The narrow tubes bring in the air that cools the radiator coolant when it becomes hot because the car is switched on.

Failure to flush a vehicle’s radiator could mean the engine overheats and breaks down and so it is necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the cooling system. A pure mixture of distilled water and antifreeze in the engine cools the engine and if compromised by dirt, it might not function efficiently. Some engine parts may freeze during winter because the mixture’s purity is compromised hence leading to some serious damages that might irreparable. Flushing of a radiator works best when the engine is fully cooled like a day when the vehicle has not been used.

Flushing a radiator entails getting rid of the dirty coolant and refilling it with a new one but for it to be effective a flushing agent must be used. The flushing agent removes dirt particles that could cause rusting or blockage of these engine parts. The coolant chemical mixture can be easily drained by raising the front of the car and unscrewing the plug of the radiator allowing the coolant to flow out into a bowl.

Follow the instructions obtained with flushing agent after refilling the engine with distilled water and the flushing agent to ensure you don’t overheat the engine. To completely get rid of the cleaning mixture, open valves on the cylinder and drain the engine once again. If your fresh antifreeze need dilution, use distilled water while following manufacturer’s instruction before filling it in the clean engine. Excess air if not gotten rid of might result in minor overheating that might have serious damages to the engine.

You can start the engine to ensure the temperatures are normal after adding the coolant then turning it off to get rid of more trapped air in the system. A vehicle type dictates how a frequent radiator flush should be done and sometimes the weather one tends to drive in. A once in every five years flushing is a healthy habit for your vehicle but it should not be limited to that because sometime early flushing might be needed like due to the presence of rust around the engine area.
